While all eyes are focused on the mammoth card that is UFC 244 Live Stream, in just over a month’s time the UFC closes out its 2019 pay-per-view schedule with a tripleheader of title fights.
On December 14th at UFC 245, Kamaru Usman defends his welterweight title against Colby Covington, who thinks he’s the champion and says he’s the champion... but he’s not the champion. The UFC's 2019 pay-per-view schedule is down to two events. This weekend sees Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz headline UFC 244 in New York City. The next — and final — PPV event of the year takes place on December 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The promotion has loaded that event with three title fights. The first of those three bouts sees Amanda Nunes defend her women's bantamweight title against Germaine de Randamie. In the co-main event of that card, Max Holloway puts his featherweight strap on the line against Alexander Volkanovski. Closing out the card, Kamaru Usman attempt to defend his welterweight crown against Colby Covington.
The UFC hosts a press conference all six of those fighters and UFC president Dana White on Friday at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event takes place at 5 p.m. ET.
Usman won the title in March of this year with a decision win over Tyron Woodley. The victory extended his winning streak to 14 straight. Usman is 10-0 in the UFC. Covington has long coveted a title shot. The former interim champion is coming off an August decision win over former champion Robbie Lawler.
Holloway is coming off a decision win over Frankie Edgar in July. He successfully defended the title in that contest. Holloway has won 14 straight fights at 145 pounds. Volkanovski joined the UFC in late 2016. Since then, he has gone unbeaten, winning seven bouts. Volkanovski's most recent victory was a May decision victory over ex-champion Jose Aldo.
Nunes holds 135 and 145-pound titles. She defends her 135-pound belt at UFC 245 against former featherweight champion de Randamie. These two met in 2013. Nunes won that fight, her second with the UFC, by TKO in the first round. Nunes is on a nine-fight winning streak. De Randamie was stripped of the 145-pound title shortly after she defeated Holly Holm in 2017. Since then, she is 2-0 and coming off a 16-second TKO win over Aspen Ladd.

Outspoken former Ultimate Fighting Championship interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is set to face off against current 170-pound king Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Dec. 14.
Ahead of the much-anticipated bout, former title challenger Darren Till offered his opinion on the matchup and praised Covington’s performance against Robbie Lawler, where he dominated the former champ from start-to-finish to earn him his shot against Usman
“Look what he’s done to (Robbie) Lawler. A lot of people said Lawler wasn’t the same; I don’t feel like that,” Till said. “I feel like Colby was just too much for Lawler, so when you break a fight down … because people hate Colby so much and take what he says so personal, they just want Usman to win. They’re not looking at Colby. Colby is actually a terrific fighter. Forget all the (expletive) he says, because he’s just an idiot. He’s actually a terrific fighter.”
Despite the impressive display, Till is leaning towards Usman to remain on top when they meet in December and believes the champion edges Covington in most areas of the fight game:
“I think if you put them both together, they’re the same fighter,” Till said. “I think Usman has everything that Colby has, just a bit better. I think he’s got more power. I don’t know who’s got the bigger gas tank. I know that Colby has an unbelievable gas tank, so I think Usman just edges it.”
Kamaru Usman Not Impressed with Jorge Masvidal’s Recent Run of Success
Jorge Masvidal has been nominated alongside Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champ Israel Adesanya as the standout fighter in 2019, although current 170-pound champ Kamaru Usman says he is unimpressed with Masvidal’s meteoric rise and believes he’s still the same fighter he’s always been and his wins are a result of the calibre of fighters the UFC have put in front of him.
Few would have predicted the 35-year-old Masvidal would have made the impact he had this year by stringing together consecutive knockouts over Darren Till and Ben Askren, with the latter setting the promotional record for the fastest knockout in history.
Masvidal then backed up those wins when he dominated Nate Diaz in their “BMF” title fight at UFC 244 earlier this month after the cage-side doctor instructed referee Dan Mirgliotta to stop the fight as a result of the cut Diaz had suffered over his right eyebrow.
While there is no denying Masvidal’s rise -- both inside and outside of the Octagon -- has been meteoric, welterweight Usman isn’t buying into it and believes nothing has changed with “Gamebred” as a fighter and his recent success is purely down to the type of fighters the promotion has given him.
“I wouldn’t say [I’ve been] impressed,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “Because it’s Masvidal, nothing’s changed. He’s the same guy. He’s fought the same way forever. It’s just the luck of the draw; he’s getting that luck of the draw. I’ve yet to see him fight a full-on welterweight from start to finish and completely dominate them. Then at that point I can say this is a different guy.”
“He’s got a lot of hype right now, and he’s been in this sport for a long, long time,” Usman said. “But at the end of the day, does it really matter that you have all that hype if you never get to the pinnacle of the sport? I like the fact that that he has all this hype. It brings a lot of eyes. So if he does make it to me and that fight is made, I would actually be very, very interested in that.”
Usman returns to action next month at UFC 245, in what is the promotion’s final pay-per-view of the year and will feature three title fights including a welterweight bout between Usman against the controversial Colby Covington

When compared to his opponent, the reigning Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stands out with its four-inch reach advantage. When it comes to age, height, and leg reach – both fighters are matched evenly. They even have the same MMA record of 15-1-0, their sole losses coming by the means of submission.
Speaking of their skillset, the Nigerian Nightmare has a Black belt in Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu but has won only one fight by submission so far. In contrast, Colby “Chaos” Covington submitted his opponents five times and will likely try to do so in this bout, as Usman lands 54% significant strikes compared to Covington’s 37% and also has recorded six knockouts. This will prove a challenging task, though, as Usman has a perfect takedown defense.
But most likely we will see the fight last the whole five rounds because Covington had his last finish more than three years ago, and Usman had his only finish in his four-year-long UFC career in 2017. Nevertheless, the fight is an absolute must-watch – who knows, maybe this will be the time when “Chaos” breaks his own UFC record of most strikes thrown in a fight?
